BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design student, Sanna Karjalainen, opted for the self-employed placement year and has started her own fashion and homeware label ‘Sanna Suvi’. She shares her entrepreneurial experiences during her placement year as a founder of her own company…
Last month the faculty’s CCI Creative Space blog featured Hannah Mitchell, one of our former placement year students.
Hannah, BA (Hons) Fashion and Textile Design, chose to do our Self-employment Placement Year where students can set up and run their own business with the support of the faculty and the University’s nest team.
Nest is the startup incubator, exclusively for students and graduates of the University of Portsmouth. Nest help to get your idea off of the ground, or take an existing startup to the next level, they offer expert advice and support, workshops, co-working space, networking opportunities, funding opportunities, and a whole host of useful resources.
In 2015/16 Hannah, spent her placement year developing her own lingerie brand, Hayze. She graduated in 2017 and now, with the help of Nest funding, Hannah has exciting plans for Hayze, which you can read more about on the CCI Creative Space blog.
Denis, a Digital Media student, started his own digital design agency during his placement year on a Self-employment Placement Year option. He had a successful year and continues to run his business in his third year.
Denis encourages other students to take a placement year saying:
“There is a big difference between University theory and putting your ideas into practice.
You don’t learn to ride a bike by reading about it, you get on and try it.”
Once again the Creative Careers team was pleased to be invited to celebrate the achievements of graduates in the School of Creative Technologies. We were really impressed to see how many former placement students won awards.
Best Placement Student: Jonathan Whitney, BSc (Hons) Entertainment Technology
Of course, we had to start with the winner of the Best Placement Student award. Eliana Lee-Gibbons, Industry Liaison Manager, Creative Careers, presented this award to Jonathan Whitney. Jonathan completed his placement year at Warner Bros as a Creative and Marketing Intern and is now working as a Creative Artworker at nDreams, the largest UK software developer to be solely focused on creating virtual reality entertainment content.
